Cleveland's First Jewish Burial

Headstone of Alexander Kahnweiler

Photographed at Willet Street Cemetery by Paul Klein in 2007

To show that Bavarian-born Alexander Kahnweiler was a Cohen, on his 1840 headstone are hands raised in the priestly blessing. It shows his Hebrew first name Alexander, then "son of" and his father's Hebrew first name. His surname is not on the stone.

Format of the writing on his headstone

 1. Here is buried
 2. Hebrew name with patronymic and status as a Cohen.
 3. Foreign name
 4. Date of death in Hebrew
 5. May his soul be bound up in the bonds of eternal life
 6. Date of death in English.
